Last night, my girlfriend and I went to an Irish pub in Rumson. Besides having amazing fish and chips and a really good onion soup (made with Guinness), they had a decent beer selection. They actually had two New Jersey beers on tap, one from Carton which is down the road in Atlantic Highlands and one from Kane out of Ocean Township. Since I’ve already had a brew from Carton (Carton Boat), I figured that I’d try one from Kane.
ABV: 6.5%
Style: American IPA
Trivia: According to an article I found about the brewery (there’s not a lot of info on their website), “Head High IPA, which is a surfer term to describe wave height, is actually a West Coast style IPA. Is there an East Coast style? I don’t think so. In any event, it was my favorite. A healthy dose of Citra hops gives Head High that grapefruit smack that you also get from Sierra Nevada Torpedo.”
Random: I’ve never actually driven into Rumson before my girlfriend and the houses there are ridiculous. It’s like one country club next to another.
This brew poured with no head on a cloudy amber body. The lack of head was probably due to the delay between it being poured and actually getting to the table. There wasn’t any lacing left on the glass either. I could see some carbonation on the brew, but not much. The nose was pretty much all grapefruit without anything else behind it. It smelled wonderful to a hophead like me. The taste started with grapefruit and then went towards a little bit of sweet malt, but the hops definitely dominated. The body was towards the thinner side with moderate carbonation. The finish was long with the grapefruit that was apparent in both the nose and the taste. This was a really nice, crisp IPA teeming with fresh grapefruit. I would definitely have this one again. Great session IPA.
