Last night, Katie and I ended up at another neighborhood bar. I hadn’t been there in awhile, but I tend not to like it. They used to have some craft beers to choose from, but generally crappy food and service. But, it looks like they even got rid of the craft beer. So, I knew any of my selections to review weren’t going to be stellar. I specifically have tried to avoid reviewing popular macros and imports so that I when I find myself at a bar with limited selections, I can review the widely-available beers. So, I went for an import this time…

ABV: 5%

Style: German Pilsener

Trivia: According to, “Beck’s ranks fifth among Germany’s best selling breweries. Beck’s is still growing in the German Market, but it is still not a major brewer in Germany. Beck’s produces parts of its beers by other companies which are owned by Beck’s such as Löwenbräu in Munich and Hasseröder in Wernigerrode. Beck’s in Bremen is the logistic German Headquarters of InBev. All advertising and logistics for the companies owned by InBev Germany is steered from there for this Market.”

Random: I think I had this beer once in my early 20s. I don’t remember anything good about it though.

As soon as the bartender sets the green bottle in front of me and I have to ask for a glass to pour it into, I know this is a mistake. I bite the bullet and poured it into the pint glass. It poured with less than half a finger of pure white head that dissipated almost instantly, leaving no lacing on the glass. The body was a clear, light yellow color with almost no visible carbonation. Hmm…given the style, my guess is this brew is past its prime. Even Katie made a comment about my choice of beverage for the night after pouring it. The nose was a bit of grain and a definite skunkiness. Wonderful. The taste reminded me of corn, with a side of skunk. The low carbonation made this even worse. The body was thin, but slightly thicker than a Bud/Coors/Miller. The finish was quick (a small miracle) with a bit of skunk. It’s funny, after drinking this, I remembered that I didn’t like beers like this even when I was young. I shocked to discover that I still don’t like them (note the sarcasm). This was just plain awful. Avoid this one.
