Lakefront New Grist Sorghum Beer

The second beer of the night. This is another one that Katie picked. I’m not quite sure why she did…I mean, neither of us have any issues with gluten. But, hey, I know it’s hard to pick out beer for me. So, let’s try this one.

ABV: 5.75%

Style: Fruit/Vegetable Beer

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “New Grist is a one-of-akind beer brewed without wheat or barley: the first of its kind that can be enjoyed by those with Celiac Disease. It is the first beer to be certified gluten-free by the US Government. Each batch we brew is tested for its gluten contents before it is bottled and shipped. New Grist is brewed from sorghum, rice, hops, water, yeast. These ingredients are carefully combined to form a crisp, refreshing “session ale: brewed for those on a gluten-free diet, or anyone with an appreciation for a great tasting, handmade beer. It pours a brilliant gold color, with a bubbly head and light, fruity aroma. The flavor is crisp and refreshing, fruity and smooth at the same time. Hints of green apple slice through the maltiness of the sorghum, making this an extremely quaffable beer. A great pairing with grilled veggies and fish, also very good with a burger and fries.”

The brew poured with a half a finger of white head that dissipated almost instantly and left no lacing on the glass. The body was a clear golden yellow with a generous amount of carbonation visible throughout. The nose had this weird fruit aroma to it. After extensive discussion with my sister, we agreed on green apple. The taste fell a bit short of the nose. It still had some prominent apple flavor with a little lemon. The body was too watery for me and the carbonation was light at best. It finished quickly with some tart apple. Honestly, not as bad as I thought this was going to be. The flavor was alright, but it was almost like ice melted in the beer. I just wish it had more substance to it.
