The Alchemist Heady Topper

Posted: June 9, 2012 in American Double/Imperial IPA, Reviews, The Alchemist

On Sunday, Katie and I headed back to Misconduct. Although we were probably still a little tired from dancing at the club the night before, we found out Friday that they were getting the only keg of this in Philly on Sunday. So, I dragged her ass out of bed to head over. I’ve heard great things about this brew, so I had to try it.

ABV: 8%

Style: American Double/Imperial IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Heady Topper is our double I.P.A.! Loaded with hops, this one will put hair on your chest.”

Random: Since there was only one seat available at the bar, I let Katie sit at the bar and she took my notes for me.

This brew poured with a one finger, white head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a hazy, dark yellow color with moderate visible carbonation. The nose had some grapefruit notes with a bit of grass and malt on the back end. On the taste, I got lots of grapefruit hops and some nice malt on the end. On first sip, I thought this was absolutely amazing. This was insanely hoppy, yet well-balanced. It was a total hop heads dream. I was totally in love with this beer (and as Katie noted, with her too). The body was towards the thicker side with moderate carbonation. The finish was long with grapefruit and malt. This beer was definitely par with Pliny. I can totally see why this beer is so actively sought after. I would definitely have this one again.
