DC Brau The Citizen

I love walking into my local beer store and seeing new offerings from breweries that favor cans. I don’t know why, maybe it’s gimmicky, but I’m really into the canned offerings. I’m also a fan when breweries get more popular and are able to expand their distribution, especially when it’s to New Jersey. Let’s crack this one open.

ABV: 7%

Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “The Citizen™ Belgian Ale is inspired by the timeless Tripel style ales of Belgium. Using a traditional high gravity “Abbey” yeast strain that encourages the production of highly palatable ethanol notes supported by Aromatic and Carapils malts. ‘The Citizen’ also exhibits the noble hop spiciness that is common to most Belgian Ales. Reigning in at 7.0% ABV this is the Brau’s strongest offering in our flagship portfolio.”

Random: Although the can art is a little boring, I’m digging it. It’s simple, but nice.

This one poured with a thick, three finger, white head that dissipated slowly, but left no lacing on the glass. The body was a slightly hazy, light orange color with moderate carbonation visible throughout. The nose was quite fragrant. I got orange, orange zest, honey and Belgian yeast. The taste wasn’t nearly as sweet as the nose. I got the orange that was present in the nose along with some cloves and Belgian yeast. There was also some apricot as well. The body was on the thicker side with moderate carbonation. The finish was quick with some clove. This was a decent brew, nothing fantastic, but an easy drinker. It’s worth a try.
