Every year, I say how I’m going to start my Christmas shopping early and be done before December. Every year, this idea fails pathetically. This year is no exception. I have only purchased two gifts. My plan for this weekend is to do massive amounts of online shopping to limit the amount of time that I will actually have to spend in stores. We’ll see how that goes. Anyways, brew time.
Style: American Porter
Trivia: According to the brewery website, “With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.”
Random: My favorite station on Pandora has to the 90s station. Nothing like a little Montell Jordan to make the day go by faster.
This brew poured with a two finger, tan head that took forever to dissipated. It left lots of lacing on the glass. The body was a dark brown color with no visible carbonation due to the color. The nose had notes of smoke, dark chocolate, roasted malts and cocoa powder. The taste was just as good as the nose. The dark chocolate and coffee came through first, quickly followed with roasted malts and a touch of smoke. The flavors were really enjoyable and balanced. The body was on the thinner side with medium carbonation. It finished rather quickly with smoke and chocolate. I can see why I’ve heard so much about this beer over the years. It really is a benchmark for the style and one that I will definitely have again.
