Furthermore Three Feet Deep

I don’t have that much experience with Furthermore beers. They’re not distributed to New Jersey and the last one that I had was reviewed in 2011. Let’s see how this one fared.

ABV: 5.5%

Style: Irish Dry Stout

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “This is our rendition of a Dry Irish Stout, circa 1890. Deep roasted malt is what makes a stout a stout, and years ago the fire of the kiln would have added its distinct smoky flavor during the roasting process. Three Feet Deep rekindles that lost flavor with a small addition of peat smoked malt. At 14.4° Plato, this is not a heavy beer, but you wouldn’t know it as the round and earthy quality of peat fills your senses. Our stout is a return to County Cork and the warmth of the Irish hearth.”

Random: I’m really enjoying “Game of Thrones.” I wish I started watching when it came out. It would make a lot more sense watching it now.

This brew poured with a really thick, tan head that almost resembled a nitro head. It dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the pint glass. The body was a dark brown, almost black colored body. There wasn’t any carbonation visible due to the color. The nose was really strong. I got bacon, smoke and dark chocolate roasted malts. There was some light coffee note as well. The taste was even more strong. The first part of the sip hit with lots of peat. Quickly after, smoke and bacon came through. There was some dark chocolate as well, but there wasn’t a lot of bitterness. The peat really took center stage on this. The body was on the thicker side, yet still velvety with higher than expected carbonation. The finish was long with earthy peat. I really liked this beer. The peat was reminiscent of a good scotch. Although this is yet another brew that isn’t distributed in New Jersey, it’s definitely worth a try, especially if you like peat.
