Unibroue Raftman

I haven’t had a Unibroue beer since 2012. I don’t know why I’ve waited so long, because they tend to put out really well-crafted beers. This one happened to be on tap at Chickie’s and Pete’s, where the other half and I ended up at dinner after house hunting last week. I didn’t think that I’d ever seen this specific beer on tap, so I had to try it.

ABV: 5.5%

Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Trivia: According to the brewery website, this beer should have these flavors, “Smoked malt whisky, low acidity masked by a caramelized apple flavor with a taste of fine yeast”

Random: I am seriously addicted to crab fries. They could be one of my favorite junk foods of all time.

This beer poured with a thick, nitro-like, off white head that dissipated slowly. It left some lacing on the glass. The body was a cloudy dark yellow color with no visible carbonation due to the cloudiness. The nose had Belgian yeast and light spice with nutmeg and a touch of peat smoke. The taste had light citrus and golden raisin. There was a touch of prune as well with some green apples. I didn’t get much of the smoked malt whisky that the brewery said would be there, which was incredibly disappointing. It had a medium thick body and high carbonation. The finish was long with citrus and a touch of caramel apple sweetness. This wasn’t a bad beer by any means, but it wasn’t impressive either. It’s still worth a shot though.
