After reading so much about this beer online and seeing the demand for it, I had resigned myself to the fact that I was not going to try it. When the other half and I went to Princeton for dinner and found this beer on tap, I was very excited. Let’s see if it lived up to the hype.
Style: Cream Ale
Trivia: According to the brewery website, “A Classic Jersey-ism is ‘regular coffee.’ Here when you order a ‘regular coffee’ at any place you trust to make a pork roll and cheese you get a paper cup of coffee with ‘milk and 2 sugars’ rather than a ‘black coffee that hasn’t had the caffeine removed.’ For our homage to Jersey’s breakfast beverage, we teamed up with our neighbors at Fair Mountain Coffee Roasters looking for an elevated version of classic plain coffee. We added this coffee blend to a high gravity golden cream ale, contributing our ‘milk and 2 sugars.’ Drink Regular Coffee because running over a black beer with coffee is no way to get to work.”
Random: Weekends are my favorite because I get to have coffee. I don’t really drink it during the week anymore.
This beer poured with a one finger, white head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a clear, burnt orange color with moderate carbonation visible. The nose was glorious and filed with coffee and cream and a touch of sweetness as well. Given all the hype, I was excited to see if the taste was as good as the nose. And indeed, it was. It was really creamy and filled with coffee and milk and a touch of sweetness as well. The booze was absolutely invisible. The body was smooth and the beer had moderate carbonation. It had a long coffee finish. This is a beer that absolutely lives up to the hype. I would get this again in a second. The other half tried it and loved it as well, which is saying a lot.
