DuClaw X-9: 865cc Coffee Stout

Posted: May 13, 2015 in American Stout, DuClaw Brewing Company, Reviews

I am still exhausted from this weekend. We were traveling for most of it, but I did end up going to my favorite beer store and getting a bunch of beers that I’m really excited to try. The beer fridges are almost full, which is awesome. Anyways, let’s see how this beer was.

ABV: 6.2%

Style: American Stout

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “X.0: 865cc Coffee Stout, the 9th experiment in the eXile series, is 6.5% abv, medium-bodied, and black in color with a large, lingering tan head. Brewed with locally roasted Cafe Racer XXX 865cc coffee to turbocharge the beer with intense roasted coffee flavors and aromas, X-9 is at the line, pin at the throttle!”

Random: I ended up getting a bunch of free glasses at the store too. I already washed them and put them in the bar.

This beer poured with a one and half finger, light brown head that dissipated quickly. It left no lacing on the glass, but a crown on top of the dark brown body. There was no carbonation visible due to the color. The nose had espresso with rich, dark chocolate. The taste had even more intense coffee notes and espresso and dark chocolate. There was some pepper at the end with some heat, which was odd given the ABV of it. This drank as a much bigger beer than it was. The body was thick and heavy with light carbonation. It had a long coffee finish with cocoa powder. This beer was $1.59 for the bottle, which broke down to $.13 per ounce. For that price, this was a beer that is worth trying if you like coffee. I would have this one again.
