Stone Imperial Mutt Brown Ale – 2015 Spotlight Series

Posted: May 20, 2015 in American Brown Ale, Reviews, Stone Brewing Company

After the other half and I ran errands on Sunday, we ended up at Uno’s in Hamilton for an early dinner. This is a beer that I’ve heard a lot about and was very excited to try. Let’s see how it was.

ABV: 9%

Style: American Brown Ale

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Stone brewers Drew Neldon and Steve Via won this year’s annual in-house Stone Spotlight Series brewing competition with this hefty brown ale – an impressive result considering that one of them had never encountered a brown ale he liked before tasting this one. Given layers of flavor from Vienna, Victory and Chocolate Wheat Malts, and warming, refined sweetness from Honey Malt and turbinado sugar, it’s a rich and soothing beer brewed with respect to traditional English methods and New World innovation. The British-American bulldog of the craft beer world? Perhaps. Best in Show? Absolutely.”

Random: Traffic today was insane. They closed a portion of the turnpike, which gave my commute an extra 45 minutes.

This beer poured with less than half a finger of tan head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing on the glass. The body was a dark brown color with light carbonation visible. The nose had notes of roasted malts, smoke and milk chocolate. It smelled like a really chocolate-y brown ale. The taste was intense with roasted malts, smoke and a licorice note. As it warmed, nutty notes came through with milk chocolate, almost like Nutella. The alcohol was very well-hidden on this beer. It had a thick body with light carbonation, making it a very nice sipper. It had a long finish with roasted malts and chocolate. For someone that isn’t a fan of brown ales, this one had more depth than I am used to, which is why I think that I enjoyed it so much. Although this wouldn’t be an everyday beer for me, I would definitely have it again.

Untappd Rating: 4.5/5.0
