MAD Sour (Sur)

Posted: July 21, 2015 in American Wild Ale, MAD Beer, Reviews

I popped this beer opening before cooking dinner on the grill. I didn’t notice that this glass was a bit dirty before doing this, and I specifically wanted a plastic glass outside. Oops. Anyways, let’s see how it was.

ABV: 5.5%

Style: American Wild Ale

Trivia: According to, “Mad Beer is a collaborative beer brand from Chef Jakob Mielcke (Restaurant Mielcke and Hurtigkarl, Frederiksberg, Denmark) and Brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergso from Mikkeller. The aim is to combine the best of two worlds: food & beer. Jakob’s knowledge and great understanding of flavors combined with Mikkel’s innovative and uncompromising approach to beer making brings a unique and conceptual line of beers brewed specifically to be enjoyed with food.”

Random: I had never heard of this beer before I received it as a gift. The concept sounds very interesting.

This beer poured with a one finger, white head that dissipated quickly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a hazy, golden orange with moderate carbonation visible. The nose was tart with tangerines and funk. The taste was also very tart with tangerines, orange, lemon pith and apricot. It had funk and horse blanket as well. The body was very light and crisp with moderate carbonation. The finish was long and tart with citrus. This was a nicely balanced sour that I would give to someone just getting their feet wet in the style. I enjoyed it, but it’s nothing I would search out. But, it was free, so I can’t really complain.

Untappd Rating: 3.5/5.0
