Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin

Posted: July 22, 2015 in American IPA, Ballast Point Brewing Company, Reviews

I was in the mood for a beer with spice tonight. Since this was hanging out in the fridge and we were having quesadillas, I decided to pop it open.

ABV: 7%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Our Sculpin IPA with Habanero Pepper began as a crazy experiment that’s taken on a life of its own. While its bright fruit notes and hoppy bite has made the original one of our favorites, this version takes that balance of flavors to the next level with the citrusy, floral heat of habaneros. Sculpin are known to sting, but this one’s got a kick.”

Random: The heat wave is finally over. I was not enjoying that.

This beer poured with a two finger, pure white head that dissipated slowly and left lots of lacing on the glass. The body was orange and clear with moderate carbonation. The nose started with grapefruit pith and then went into Habanero heat. The taste started with grapefruit and citrusy hops, the tropical fruit and light malt sweetness. Then, it hit me right in the back of the throat. Intense peppery heat, and lots of it. It lingered for awhile and opened my nostrils on a few sips too. The body was medium thick with moderate carbonation. It had a long and hot finish with Habanero. This was $2.99 for the bottle, which broke down to $.25 per ounce. If you’re into spice, this is a beer you would enjoy. I would have this one again, even though I found the spice to be a touch unbalanced.

Untappd Rating: 4.0/5.0

  1. […] Habanero IPAs, but I find them to be hit or miss (see my review of Ballast Point’s version here). Flying Dog’s Brewhouse Rarity series is equally hit or miss, so let’s see how this […]
