When Val brought this bottle home for me, I was very excited. I love blood orange. I love eating them raw, cooking with them, everything you can imagine. So, when I saw that this was a mead with blood orange and spices, I had high hopes. I’ve had a bunch of stuff from these guys and they really put out quality stuff. I wish they were closer so I could make a visit to them. According to their website, they also adopted a no-tip policy at their taproom so they could pay their employees a regular hourly wage that wasn’t dependent on tips. I think that is even cooler.
Trivia: The only information that I could find out about this was that it is a limited mead.
Random: So many Geno Smith jokes, so little time.
This mead poured with absolutely no head and a clear, light pink body. There was no carbonation visible. The nose had notes of blood orange, Thai basil, nutmeg, cinnamon and anise. The taste was even better. Some sour, blood orange and then the flavor profile was dominated by spice. The same basil was there along with anise, cinnamon and nutmeg. The alcohol was relatively well-hidden, given the ABV. It had a medium body with almost no carbonation. The finish was lengthy with basil and anise and a touch of citrus. The bottle was $13.59 for 16 ounces, which broke down to $.85 per ounce. This was definitely a pricey mead, but the flavor was amazing. I will definitely have this again because I loved the flavors and I loved the spice. It was worth every penny.
