Our third stop was at Banded Horn Brewing Company, which was right down the road from Run of the Mill. As soon as we walked in, I knew I was going to like this place. They had a Foosball table, ping-pong table and corn hole set up inside the tasting room. The bar was large and they had lots of selections on tap to taste. We played a round of ping-pong and managed to get a ball to roll under a fermentor. That’s skill right there. We did two tasting paddles and the stand outs were the Greenwarden (which I brought home to review) and the Daikaiju (which I did not bring home to review). If you’re in the area, it is definitely worth a visit. After this, we went to check in to our hotel in Kennebunkport and thus ended day #1 in Maine.
Style: Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Part of the Farmhouse Series – brewed with Brett and raspberries then aged on oak chips.”
Random: This was my free beer at Hayseed, the restaurant on the Smuttynose property.
This beer poured with a one finger, white head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a hazy red color with no visible carbonation because of the cloudiness. The nose was filled with raspberries and a touch of funk. It had oak as well and just a really inviting scent. The taste was filled with raspberry with a touch of funk and sour. The oak was mellow and added some vanilla notes to the beer, which made it very pleasant. It had a thin body with moderate carbonation. The finish was lengthy with red raspberries and light tartness. I really enjoyed this beer and it was one of the standouts from Smutty. If you can find it, it’s worth a shot if you like beers with Brett.
