Bissell Brothers The Substance

The next brewery that we headed to was Barreled Souls. This was also on the side of a road in what looked like a converted house. The brewery was in the basement with the tasting room. It was a dark space, but their chairs and tables were all used barrels. As soon as we walked in, it smelled like a brewery. They had a shuffleboard table (one of the few times we did not take advantage of a game at a brewery) and some seating. When we made our way to the bar, we had a sampler paddler with their offerings. They had a few different variations on goses (which were really nice) and a few other beers. They had a stout that was aged in Woodford Reserve barrels which was amazing. They were also incredibly friendly and we met someone there who worked at another brewery as gave us lots of recommendations of other beer places to make our way to. I should have taken a growler, but since it was so early in our vacation, we just bought a glass. This was another favorite of our vacation.

ABV: 6.5%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Our flagship; a brightly dank ale that threads many needles.”

Random: This was another beer that they ran out of at the brewery, so I’m glad I got a shot at trying this one.

This beer poured with a one finger, white head that dissipated quickly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a cloudy orange color with no visible carbonation. The nose has a lot of citrus notes with dank pine as well. There wasn’t any malt to this on the nose. The taste had the same citrus notes, specifically grapefruit and grapefruit zest. Pine resin came through as well too. It had a grassy undertone too. As in the nose, there was no malt to the taste either. It had a thick body with moderate carbonation. The finish was lengthy and crisp with citrus and pine. This was a very enjoyable beer that I wish I could have had more of.

Untappd Rating: 4.0/5.0
