Schlafly Coffee Stout

Posted: January 9, 2016 in Oatmeal Stout, Reviews, Saint Louis Brewery/Schlafly Tap Room

Two Schlafly beers two days in a row! This will be the 10th beer I’ve reviewed from them and the second stout.

ABV: 5.7%

Style: Oatmeal Stout

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Our coffee stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the sotut balancing the acidity of the coffee. We use a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer. In the 1990’s, Kaldi’s staff started visiting the Schlafly Tap Room, asking for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso. Both Schlafly and Kaldi’s realized this was a match made in beer heaven, and soon started working together to find the perfect coffee blend to mix with our Oatmeal Stout. This collaboration continues today, with regular tastings to perfect the Coffee Stout.”

Random: This is a seasonal beer which is available November through March.

This beer poured with a finger of tan head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a dark brown with high carbonation despite the dark color. The nose didn’t have enough coffee as I would have thought given the name. It did have some roasted malts and dark chocolate and some smoke. The taste had a lot more coffee. It manifested as really thin espresso. Dark chocolate came through too, but the beer wasn’t incredibly bitter. There was a mild vanilla note in there too with smoke. The body was thin with high carbonation. It had a quick finish with coffee and smoke. A single of this was $1.50 ($.12 per ounce), which is a really good price. But, I found that this beer wasn’t remarkable and I would have appreciated more flavor and a thicker body.
