J.K. Scrumpy Orchard Gate Gold Hard Cider

Val picked out this cider to try. Since she’s liked a few of their other ciders, she wanted to see how this one was. We normally have a lot of cider in the house because she likes it, which also accounts for the increase in cider reviews that you see. It also helps that ciders are becoming more and more popular and they’re making their way to beer stores. Let’s crack it open.

ABV: 6%

Style: Cider

Trivia: This cider is unfiltered and organic.

Random: For as many beer glasses as I have, I only have a few beer openers. I should look at getting more.

This cider poured with less than a quarter of a finger of white head. It dissipated instantly and left no lacing on the glass. It poured a clear, bright orange color with moderate carbonation visible. The nose was pleasant. It had crisp and sweet Golden delicious apples and not much else. The taste was an absolute sugar bomb. It started with sweet apples and then went into a note of golden honey. It was definitely cloying and I had trouble drinking it. I tried to pick up other flavors, but I kept going back to how sweet the cider was. It was like the sweetest apple juice that I’ve ever had, mixed with some alcohol. The body was on the thicker side of cider with moderate carbonation. The finish was long and sweet from the apples and honey notes. This was $6.99 for the bottle, which broke down to $.32 per ounce. I really wanted to like this cider, but I couldn’t get through more than a few sips of this. I won’t be having this one again and neither will Val. She likes sweet things and this cider was too overwhelming for her as well.
