Stone 24 Carrot Golden Ale

Posted: February 17, 2016 in Belgian Strong Pale Ale, Reviews, Stone Brewing Company

One of the things that I like about the direction craft beer is going in is that we’re getting all sorts of different types of beer. I love carrot cake, so I was excited to try the beer.

24carrot

ABV: 8.5%

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “2015 marked the seventh year of our American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned Stone Homebrew Competition. Juli Goldenberg, this year’s winner, added carrots, raisins, cinnamon and more to a Belgian-style golden strong ale to create a beer that is the liquid embodiment of carrot cake. As the name implies, this beer is richly aromatic and envelopes the palate with decadent flavors of cream cheese frosting, cinnamon, vanilla, carrots and raisins plus subtle malt sweetness, ending with a medium-dry finish. It’s nothing short of brilliant and well deserving of the 24 karat (carrot?) golden opportunity to be brewed by Stone and distributed across the country.”

Random: This beer comes in at 40 IBUs.

The beer poured with a one and a half finger white head. It dissipated quickly and left no lacing on the glass. The body was ever-so-slightly hazy and light orange. There was very little carbonation to it. The nose had Belgian yeast, orange zest, vanilla, carrot and spice. I couldn’t single out a specific spice, but the nose was nice. The taste started with carrot and vanilla. Yeast came through next along with spice. I picked up nutmeg and ginger specifically. Alcohol was prevalent in this beer. It gave it a bite that I wasn’t a huge fan of. What I didn’t pick up was raisins. Also, for a beer that billed itself as a carrot cake beer, I expected some icing that reminded me of icing, but there isn’t one. The body was on the thicker side of the style with light carbonation. It had a long finish with bite from the alcohol and spice. The bomber was $8.99, which came to $.41 per ounce. I didn’t hate this beer, but if you’re expecting it to taste like carrot cake, you’re going to be disappointed.
