Newport Storm Sour Puss

A few months back, Wolaver announced that they would no longer be producing beers. Since they are owned by Otter Creek, it’s really just that they won’t be producing under that label. They cited increasing prices on organic ingredients as the reason to cease production. I can’t say this will affect me much, as I’ve only had one beer from them, and it was mediocre, but given the growth in the industry, it’s surprising to see a label shut down. The other brewery that announced they were closing a few months ago that really upset me was Pretty Things out of Massachusetts. They weren’t distributed in Jersey, but I got to try 9 different beers from them, some of which were pretty outstanding (especially the Meadowlark IPA). They didn’t really give a reason, but people have surmised that it has to do with the decline in popularity of beers in bomber format and the pay-to-play climate of the Boston beer scene. Either way, this has left me feeling a little…sour (see the transition there?).

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “This not quite Berliner Weisse, not quite Belgian Sour is our way of taking the unique flavors from a soured ferment and balancing them with real cherries. It should be obvious why we put ‘sour’ in the name. Why they put ‘puss’ in the name, well…The brewers challenged themselves with this sour wheat ale when the decided to play with multiple strains of lactobacillus (a wild yeast strain) instead of just one, and they were rewarded with this lip-puckering brew! The backbone of Sourpuss consists of North American wheat malt, North American pale malt and just a dash of bittering Warrior hops. The real icing, or should we say cherry on the top, comes from 450 pounds of Oregon dark cherries added to sweeten up this brew while remaining true to the sour ale style.”

This beer poured with a half a finger of ecru colored head. It dissipated quickly and left no lacing on the glass. The body was a clear, dark reddish-amber color with light carbonation visible. The nose had some tartness that made way for sour cherries. The taste started with moderate tartness and lemon peel. Lactobacillus came through too. The sour cherries were there and gave it some depth as well. Lemon peel was there as well. The body was light with moderate carbonation. It had a quick, acidic finish with lacto and cherries. The bottle was $3 and purchased from a restaurant package shop ($.25 per ounce). This beer would make a really good introductory beer for someone who doesn’t have much experience with sours. I enjoyed it, but I wish it were a bit more intense with the sour notes.
