Epic Big Bad Baptist

Posted: March 14, 2016 in American Double/Imperial Stout, Epic Brewing Co, Reviews

This is a beer that I was excited to try. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it and I’ve looked for it multiple times, without success. I managed to find it at Joe Canal’s when I was looking for another beer. I probably should have aged it, but I couldn’t wait to try it.

ABV: 11.8%

Style: American Double/Imperial Stout

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Imperial stout with cocoa nibs and Coffee beans. Each season’s release uses a different dark roasted coffee.”

Random: They recommend pairing this with hard cheeses and dark chocolate desserts. I can see that.

This beer poured with a one finger, light brown head. It dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the snifter. The body was an inky, black color with no visible carbonation due to the color. The nose had smoke, espresso, roasted malts and dark chocolate. It smelled really good and there was no hint of the high ABV. The taste had espresso, although not as strong as the nose. It had roasted malts and dark chocolate as well. Some oak came through with vanilla and whiskey. After it warmed, some dark fruit came through at the end of the sip. The body was thick and silky with light carbonation. It had a lengthy finish with char and dark chocolate. A bomber of this set me back $15.99, which came to $.72 per ounce. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but worth every penny. This beer was awesome and had so much depth and flavor. I would definitely have this again.

Untappd Rating: 4.5/5.0
