Blue Moon Gingerbread Spiced Ale

Posted: March 15, 2016 in Coors Brewing Company, Herbed/Spiced Beer, Reviews

Val and I went to Brick House with my sister and they didn’t have much on tap that sounded interesting. Val ended up with this beer, which was their “Blue Moon Seasonal.” I haven’t reviewed a Blue Moon beer since 2012.

ABV: 5.9%

Style: Herbed/Spiced Beer

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Not too long ago, we asked fans to suggest ingredients for a new limited winter release that would best fit the season. After lots of great suggestions and tastings with fans, Gingerbread Spiced Ale came out on top. With tastes of ginger, cinnamon, and molasses, it’s clear why they chose this wintery brew.”

Random: This is a “limited” Winter release, although I highly doubt you’ll have any trouble finding it if you want to try it.

This beer poured with half a finger of white head that dissipated slowly and actually left some lacing on the glass. The body was a medium-amber color and clear with a lot of carbonation visible. The nose had gingerbread and brown sugar, but then had a citrus note as well, most reminiscent of orange segments. The cinnamon and ginger came through on the nose too. The taste started with orange segments and then went into ginger and clove, with some cinnamon. The body was light with prickly carbonation. It had a quick finish with spice. I was prepared to hate this beer, but it wasn’t awful. The transition from citrus into spice wasn’t seamless, but the flavor was alright. Given what I expected of this beer, that’s a compliment. I wouldn’t order it again or search it out, but it’s drinkable.
