Val and I went into Pennsylvania to visit some breweries. This brewery was in the middle of Boyertown, which is a sleepy little town with not much going on. This brewery is also a coffeehouse and it was basically empty when we were there. This was the first beer that we had.
Style: American Black Ale
Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Our Drinc Hael is brewed in the traditions of our Saxon ancestors. This ancient ale is a warm wintery dark malted style. Brewed with holiday spices and blue spruce tips. This selection of natural preservation and flavoring botanicals chosen is certain to please the nose, spruce the pallet, and warm the heart.”
Random: They had another room in the back that was a stage. It looked like they had a lot of local musicians come there, which is probably a good thing if you live in a small town.
The beer poured with a one finger, thick, tan head. It dissipated slowly and left lots of lacing on the glass. The body was a dark brown with high visible carbonation. The nose was pleasant and had roasted malts, cocoa powder, mint and spruce tips. Unfortunately, the taste wasn’t as good. It had a lot of mint. The spruce tips came through as well, but competed with the mint. Any balance that would have been offered by the cocoa powder or the roasted malts was lost. I kept trying to find the spice in it as well, but alas, it wasn’t there. The body was thick and chewy, and I would have guessed that the ABV was higher than 7% ABV. The finish lasted forever with mint and spruce. I’ve had some beers that use spruce tips that have been absolutely excellent (Banded Horn Greenwarden)and I thought this beer would be as good. I was wrong. I wouldn’t have this again and didn’t finish the glass.
