Stone Coffee Milk Stout

Posted: July 24, 2016 in Milk/Sweet Stout, Reviews, Stone Brewing Company

Today’s selection is a beer that would go great with Sunday mornings, at least because of the coffee and chocolate notes. Although I dare say that this beer would be good at any time of day.

ABV: 5%

Style: Milk/Sweet Stout

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “From imperial stouts to IPAs, we’ve discovered the tantalizingly roasty lift that comes from adding coffee beans to just about any kind of beer. This English-style milk stout, originally a limited-edition offering at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, proved the perfect foil for beans from San Diego-based Ryan Bros Coffee. The bitterness of the coffee is balanced out brilliantly by the milk sugar we used to add a touch of sweetness and creaminess to the stout’s smooth, easy-drinking texture. Cheers to the coalescence of two highly artisanal (and delectable) mediums.”

Random: This beer uses Magnum hops and was first released on October 5, 2015.

This beer poured with a half finger of tan head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing on the glass. A slight crown was left on top of the dark brown body. There was light carbonation visible. On the nose, I picked up a lot of espresso and dark chocolate. I didn’t get milk or lactose. The taste had a bit more creaminess than the nose, but it still has a lot more espresso and dark chocolate notes. What added some depth was a touch of ash and smoke from the roasted malts. It had a thick, chewy body with high carbonation, complemented by a long finish with espresso beans. A single bottle of this was $1.83, which broke down to $.152 per ounce. This drank like a much bigger beer than it was. I will be picking a few more of these up, that’s for sure.
