Troegs Nimble Giant

Posted: December 20, 2016 in American Double/Imperial IPA, Reviews, Troegs Brewing Company

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a beer from Troegs and when I saw this on the shelves, with the new can art, I had to give it a shot.

ABV: 9%

Style: American Double/Imperial IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “We didn’t set out to release another Double IPA, but when we tasted this hop combination, we latched on and didn’t let go. Nimble Giant evolved from our small-batch Scratch Series. It started as an experiment with Mosaic hops, and after six Scratch batches it became Nimble Giant. We like how this beer builds. The layers of Mosaic, Azacca and Simcoe hops take over your senses. Mango, tropical fruit, and creamsicle notes give the beer a silky, juicy underbelly that builds to a punch in the face of grapefruit rind, honeysuckle and pineapple.”

Random: I need to get a Troegs tin tacker for my basement. I love their new look.

The brew poured with a half a finger of thick, cream colors head that dissipated slowly. It left some lacing on the glass. The body was a clear, golden orange color with lots of carbonation visible. The nose had a lot of pine resin and floral honeysuckle. I also picked up wildflower honey and malt too. The taste started with syrupy sweetness and honeysuckle with the same wildflower honey in the nose. It quickly went into pineapple and mango. Then, pine resin and a fresh-cut grass note. There was some alcohol at the end of the sip, but not as much as the ABV would imply. It had a thick body with moderate carbonation. The finish was lengthy and tropical with honeysuckle and mango. I really enjoyed this beer and it had a lot of depth. I picked this can up for $2.75 ($.17 per ounce). No matter what the price of this beer, I would highly recommend trying it.
