Funky Buddha is now getting distribution to Philadelphia. I have tried a bunch of their beers, but didn’t know they made a blood orange beer. I haven’t found a blood orange beer that I’ve truly enjoyed, so I hope this one changes my mind.
Style: American IPA
Trivia: According to the brewery website, “More Moro Blood Orange IPA is back! We ceremoniously slaughtered heaps of crimson-fleshed ‘Moro’ fruit to retrieve its delicious ichor, and then blended it with caramel malts and grapefruity hops to produce the sticky, citrus blast that we crave. Oranges: you’re on notice.”
Random: This is a March to May seasonal beer.
The beer poured with a half a finger of white head. It dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a hazy orange color with light carbonation visible. The nose was everything that I’ve ever wanted from a blood orange beer. It was filled with fresh squeezed blood orange juice and grass. I couldn’t pick up more from the nose. The taste even better. It was the same fresh blood orange juice. It also had a Campari note with grass. There was pine sap as well, but it still let the citrus shine. The body was light with high carbonation. It had a lengthy finish with blood orange rind. I got a bottle for $2.77, which came to $.23 per ounce. This beer was easily the best blood orange beer that I ever tried. I will be getting a few more six-packs of this without a doubt.
