Jackie O’s Mandala Simcoe

One of the other things that my hotel offered was a popcorn machine in the lobby. I loved fresh popped popcorn, so I visited the machine more often than I should have. It helped me get through some of the late nights working at the hotel.

ABV: 9%

Style: American Double/Imperial IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “The Mandala series is designed to highlight single hop varietals. These double IPAs are exclusively hopped with an individual hop strand allowing both the brewer & consumers to fully taste and smell all the pure hop character. We have released many different Mandalas including; Citra, Galaxy, Zythos, Simcoe, Motueka, and Columbus. More will surface in the future, but grab ’em fresh when you see them!”

Random: This beer comes in at 110 IBUs.

This beer poured with a one finger, pure white, thick head. It went away slowly and left a lot of lacing on the glass. The body was a clear, bright yellow with moderate carbonation. The nose had notes of cat pee, which reminded me of a pine cleaner. The taste was also all cat pee, more than any other Simcoe beer that I ever had. There was also some citrus pith and grapefruit juice. It still reminded me of a cleaner. The body was on the thinner side of the style with moderate carbonation. It had a quick finish with the same cleaner note. This beer had way too much Simcoe for me. If you’re really into Simcoe, I would say to give it a shot, but otherwise, this is one to avoid.
