The Referend Berliner Messe – Gloria

This was the last beer I had at The Referend, before we headed to Troon.

ABV: 4%

Style: Berliner Weissbier

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “The microflora from the inoculated wort and barrels now proliferate and out-compete one another, fermenting and acidifying the beer. After a few months, the barrels’ contents are enjoyable and resemble lambic, but for up to four full years the yeasts and bacteria jockey for dominance, imparting different characteristics to the finished beer. Because each barrel is wholly distinct, the real art of lambic production lies in blending barrels to produce the desired combination, and carrying some essential aspects from batch to batch of the same brands. The Referend Bier Blendery is based upon the Belgian geuzestekerij (or geuze-blendery) in which pubs, individuals, or commercial producers purchase young lambic from local brewers, age in oak casks and blend and package to taste. In order to execute this model in America, where coolships are scarce, we bring our mobile coolship to a local host brewery. There, we collect the wort brewed to our specification and send it to the coolship where the wort cools overnight in the ambient cold air before being brought back to the blendery to begin its extended aging in oak. Our Méthode Lambic beers aim to pay homage to Brussels’ proud history and heritage of lambic through our distinctly modernist sensibility: take the best of the ancients, and make it new.”

Random: I bought more violet flavored mints this week. They’re my favorite.

The beer poured with a finger of pure white head. It dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. A finger of white head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was quite cloudy and yellow in color. I couldn’t see any carbonation on this beer. The nose was super funky with lots of yeast and some white wine and earthy flavors as well. The taste was quite funky with only light vanilla and oak characteristics. It was a bit too funky for my taste. The body was way too thin with not enough carbonation. The finish was lengthy with horse blanket and funk. I wasn’t a big fan of this beer. The funk was way too much for me.
