River Horse My Name Is Citrus Maximus

Tonight’s beer is one that I originally picked up from the brewery on the weekend that it was released. Let’s see how it was.

ABV: 4.9%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Staying true to the name, we double dosed this IPA with Citra hops by adding them in the boil and again during the dry hop, where we combined them with Mosaic hops for their complex fruity aroma. We also used huge amounts of passion fruit and white grapefruit to create this super citrusy and refreshing IPA. – 4.9%”

Random: This beer uses Citra, Falconer’s Flight and Mosaic hops.

The beer poured with a finger and a half of ecru colored head. It dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body itself was a cloudy, bright orange. There was no carbonation visible due to the murkiness. The nose was a bit disappointing. I was expected a huge amount of citrus and tropical fruit, but instead, I got a lot of biscuit malt and only a touch of grapefruit oil. The taste had a bit more depth. It had the same biscuit malt up front, but quickly went into white pears, pineapple and passion fruit. There were also notes of grapefruit oil as well. The body was on the thicker side with high carbonation. The finish was quick with bright citrus and tropical fruit. A pounder can of this was $3.50, which came to $.22 per ounce, which is a bit pricey for a regular IPA. Despite that, I would have this one again.

Untappd Rating: 3.5/5.0
