Founders Barrel Runner

When Val and I were in Hawaii, I drank a lot of rum. The Hawaiian beer scene is alright, but the cocktail game was on point and almost everything had rum in it. We even went to a distillery on Kauai and tasted a bunch of different rum. They had a coffee rum that was absolutely amazing.

ABV: 11.1%

Style: American Double/Imperial IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Inspiration for our barrel-aged beers can come from the most unexpected places and our latest release is proof of that. Sweet and hoppy, rich and bright – this rum barrel-aged imperial IPA brewed with Mosaic hops will make you believe you’re in the tropics.”

Random: This beer came in at 55 IBUs.

The beer poured with a finger and a half of pure white head. It was relatively thick and dissipated slowly. It left a lot of lacing on the glass. The body was moderate hazy and a mahogany brown. There was only some carbonation visible. The nose was filled with rum. It had banana and citrus as well. The booze was apparent on the nose, too. The taste was filled with rum and brown sugar and molasses. There was
some citrus from the hops as well. Booze was very apparent on this one. The body was thick with a lot of carbonation. The finish was lengthy with rum and booze. I picked the bomber up for $10.99, which came to $.50 per ounce. I liked this beer, but it could have used a year or two to age.
