Pipeworks Lil Citra

I’ve been trying more session beers lately. I tend to go through these phases and with Winter coming, I’ll probably transition to bigger beers soon. But for now, let’s crack this one open.

ABV: 4.9%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: According to wikipedia.com, “Citra Brand is a registered trademark used with HBC 394 cv special aroma hop variety developed by the Hop Breeding Company (a joint venture between John I. Haas, Inc. and Select Botanicals Group, LLC) and funded by Sierra Nevada, Deschutes, and Widmer Brothers breweries. It was released in 2007. Citra Brand hops have fairly high alpha acids and total oil contents with a low percentage of cohumulone content. Citra Brand hops imparts citrus (grapefruit) and tropical fruit characters to beer.”

Random: I didn’t realize the photo of the beer was this bad until I went to post this. Oops.

The beer poured with a thick, one finger, white head. It took awhile to dissipate and left a lot of lacing on the glass. The body was cloudy and copper in color. There was a lot of carbonation visible, despite the cloudiness. The nose was filled with grapefruit pith and grapefruit flesh. It had a slightly tropical note to it as well, but the dominant note was grapefruit. The taste was big for a session IPA. It started with the same grapefruit notes of flesh and pith. It quickly went into a mango note with a decent amount of malt to back it up. The body was thick for a session IPA with a lot of carbonation. It had a sticky and lengthy finish with grapefruit zest. I picked this up awhile ago, so I’m not sure what I paid for it, but I loved this beer. It had big flavor and low ABV.

Untappd Rating: 4.0/5.0
