Paradox Skully Barrel No. 57: Pina Cielo

Tonight’s selection is a barrel aged sour. I really tend to like those, so I was excited to open it.

ABV: 8.5%

Style: American Wild Ale

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Every beer that Paradox Beer Company produces is barrel-aged and bottle-conditioned. In 2012, Jeff, Brian and David, equipped with over 30 years of combined professional brewing experience, founded Paradox Beer Company. Paradox Beer Company produces original and rare beers which honor the uncertainty of nature bound with rigorous quality testing, providing one-of-a-kind flavors that could only be produced by Paradox.”

Random: There’s another brewery called Paradox based in the Adirondacks. I haven’t tried anything from them yet.

The brew poured with a half a finger of white, wispy head. It dissipated quickly with no lacing left on the glass. The body was a cloudy orange/light yellow color. There was no carbonation visible due to the cloudiness. The nose was filled with pineapple, apricot, peach and white vinegar. There was also a touch of oak and light vanilla as well. The taste was moderately sour. It had a nice vinegar presence that quickly followed up with pineapple, apricot and a touch of mango. I didn’t pick up on any of the cinnamon. There was a pleasant amount of wine barrel with oak. The alcohol was well-hidden. The finish was lengthy and sour with moderate carbonation. I wonder if their year or so of age this beer has mellowed out the barrel. Either way, this was an enjoyable beer and I’m glad I got to try it. I just wish I picked up some of the warm spice that was supposed to be there.
