Catawba Friki Tiki – Blood Orange IPA

On vacations, Val and I have started to search out trivia nights. The night before, we had gone to trivia at Edmunds Oast Brewery and came in second, despite missing 3 rounds. We went to Palmetto Brewing Company the next night to hit up their trivia night.

ABV: 6.5%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “This series of fruited IPAs began in our Asheville South Slope pilot brewery, where they consistently ranked among our fastest-selling Small Batch beers. Seasonal fruit selections vary between batches to ensure optimal freshness, showcasing the tropical and citrus-forward character of each IPA, always light in body and incredibly drinkable.”

Random: I wish I could find a year-round blood orange beer. When they’re done well, I really enjoy them.

The beer poured with a half a finger of white head. It dissipated quickly and left very little lacing on the pint glass. The body was slightly hazy and orange in color with a lot of carbonation visible. The nose was filled with citrus. I picked up blood oranges along with mandarin oranges. There were some notes of malt as well. The taste also had a lot of citrus and the blood orange juice was apparent up front. There was also some wheat in this as well. There was a bit of malt, but the citrus definitely took center stage. The body was on the lighter side with plentiful carbonation. It had a smooth finish with orange peel. I thought this was a good beer that I would be happy to have again.
