Yeah, I know, I dropped off the face of the planet. This has probably been the longest that I’ve gone without posting. I have a bunch of reviews to post that I’m backlogged on. This whole wedding/child thing really takes up a huge amount of time. That, and I’ve never been more tired in my life. But, I have to say that it’s really rewarding. So, the first of a bunch of backlogged reviews.

ABV: 6%

Style: Old Ale

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Old Tom with chocolate is an indulgent rich combination of Robinsons’ award winning Old Tom and the finest cocoa. It is a superior full bodied strong ale filled with the flavour of ripe malt and velvety smooth chocolate teased together with an inspired touch of Madagascan bourbon vanilla.”

Random: This is another beer that Kate bought me to review. As usual, it’s a British beer.

This brew poured with a half a finger of off white head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing on the glass. The body was a clear mahogany color with moderate visible carbonation. I really don’t know what I expected a “chocolate” ale, but this definitely was not it. The nose had definite chocolate notes (think Hershey’s chocolate bar) and coffee with hops on the back end. The taste was shockingly great. The chocolate hit me first, but it was really light and wasn’t syrupy or overwhelming. The hops came up next and had a pleasant and almost floral bitterness to it. The final part of the sip had a mild coffee flavor. The body was on the lighter side with moderate carbonation. The booze wasn’t a factor on this one at all. The quick finish on it left me wanting more. I really liked this one, especially for a brew I wasn’t expecting much from. I would definitely have this one again.
