For dinner tonight, the girlfriend and I went to Harvest Moon in New Brunswick. It’s a local brewpub with good food. We tasted 3 different beers during dinner tonight: Belgian Saison, Moonlight Kolschbier, and Rye Bock. First up was the Saison.

ABV: 5.4%

Style: Saison/Farmhouse Ale

Trivia: Saisons were typically brewed in Autumn or Winter so they could be consumed during the late summer harvest.

Random: This was the favorite beer of the night.

This beer was served with a one finger head with very little lacing. The head dissipated quickly. It poured with a burnt orange color and it was slightly cloudy. There was visible carbonation. There was significant scents of lemon and coriander on the nose. There was a taste of hops on the finish. But, it was a nice beer to go with dinner. I’ve definitely had better, but this was pretty good.

Next beer up was the Rye Bock (on the left)….

ABV: 6.1%

Style: Maibock

Trivia: According to wikipedia, “The Maibock style is a pale version of a traditional bock. It is a fairly recent development compared to other styles of bock beers, frequently associated with springtime and the month of May.”

Random: I thought this would have been a nicer fall beer. But, it was nice after having so many light beers recently.

This was listed on the menu as their version of a maibock. It also said that the noble hop flavor was due to Saaz and Hallertau hops. This poured with a one finger head that lasted for a while with significant lacing. It was a pretty mahogany color. There wasn’t a lot on the nose. But, the taste was nice and bitter. It was almost burnt. There were some maple and burnt brown sugar undertones. I enjoyed this beer.

Next up, the Kolschbier (on the right in the picture above)…

ABV: 4.8%

Style: Kolschbier

Trivia: To be considered a true Kolschbier, it has to be brewed in Cologne, Germany, much like Champagne can only be brewed in Champagne, France (so I guess this isn’t a true Kolschbier).

Random: I think this beer may have been past its prime. As my girlfriend put it, it smelled and tasted like Clorox.

This beer was a very light yellow color and heavily carbonated with a one finger head. It smells like lemon zest and some other funky smell that I can’t place. The taste is light and lemony, almost floral. There’s also some other taste I can’t place, but it doesn’t seem right.  It’s almost like mildew. It’s a little too light for me and the gf doesn’t like it either.

We decided the overwhelming favorite of the night was the Saison. But, a very fun and relaxing night.
