Other Half Green City

This is a beer that I had on tap at one of my favorite craft beer bars in New York City, The Ginger Man. Let’s see how it was.

ABV: 7%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “In 2014, Sam Richardson, Matt Monahan and Andrew Burman founded Other Half Brewing Company, a local brewery in New York City with a simple mission: to create beers that they wanted to drink from a company that they wanted to be a part of. Their vision was to build a passionate team that brewed great beers in the state of New York—done so with effort and thoughtfulness—to represent the ‘Other Half’ of the industry. Today, the Other Half team crafts beers in their Brooklyn brewery. They’re dedicated to collaborating with breweries both in New York as well as across the world in an effort to constantly move the industry forward while elevating the craft. The Other Half team believes that local breweries play an important role in their communities which is why they partner with these other likeminded brewers and brands in local nabes across the country and the world—but always return to their home state of New York and their Brooklyn taproom.”

Random: This beer is now retired.

The beer poured with a one finger, pure white head. It dissipated quickly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was completely hazy and bright yellow in color. There was a lot of carbonation visible. The nose was very hoppy with lots of pine and tropical fruit. I picked up a lot of pineapple. The taste had a lot of hops with pine notes, pineapple and grapefruit. There was only a small amount of malt in the flavor. The body was on the thicker side with a lot of carbonation. It had a sticky and lengthy finish with tropical fruit. I enjoyed this beer a lot and anytime I get to have an Other Half beer is a treat.

Other Half Citra/Equinox

Val and I had to go into New York City for a concert and went to the Whole Foods in Columbus Circle. The bar there had Other Half on tap, but I have never seen a food store so crowded. I got hit in the ankles at least 10 times trying to get to the bar. We stayed for a beer and then left.

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Other Half Brewing Company was founded in 2014 by Samuel Richardson and Matt Monahan. We brew craft beers for draft consumption, bottles, and cans in limited release. We believe local breweries play an important role in their communities which is why, despite the challenges of running a brewery in NYC, we couldn’t choose anywhere but Brooklyn as our home. The brewery is located on the edge of Carroll Gardens, only two blocks from the subway. Our tap room is open to the public and we also offer tours of our brewery (by appointment).”

Random: I could never live in New York full time. I need my space.

This beer poured with a half a finger of pure white head. It dissipated slowly and it left a lot of lacing on the glass. The body was a hazy, lemon-yellow with moderate carbonation. The nose was filled with tropical fruit. Specifically, I picked up mango, papaya and guava and passionfruit. There wasn’t any malt in the nose. The taste was equally tropical with a lot of mango and passion fruit. There was a drying presence from the alcohol. There was also some crackery malt. The body was light for the style and very crisp. It had a lot of carbonation as well. The finish was lengthy with tropical hops and mango. I thought this beer was outstanding and had great hop flavor. If you haven’t tried this beer, you need to do so immediately.

Other Half Forever Ever

Val and I went to Brooklyn awhile back and she took me to Other Half. Unfortunately, it was so crowded that we couldn’t even get in the door. So, we headed to the bar at Whole Foods in Gowanus, who had this on tap.

Random: I have never seen a brewery so busy as Other Half.

This beer poured with a one finger, pillowy white head. It hung around for awhile and left a decent amount of lacing on the glass. The body was very cloudy and bright orange. Because of the cloudiness, there wasn’t much carbonation apparent. The nose was fragrant with the expected pine hops. It also had some herbal notes with a hint of orange peel and floral perfume. I couldn’t place the exact flower that it was, maybe lilac? The taste started with pine, but it was definitely towards a pine resin note. I didn’t pick up much of the citrus or the floral note, just really oily pine needles. It was quickly followed up by pale malt that gave it some balance and body. The body was thicker than I’m used to for a session IPA, which is a good thing. It had plenty of carbonation and went down easily. The finish was sticky with pine oil and needles. For my first beer from Other Half, I thought this was an exceptional example of a session IPA and wouldn’t hesitate in having it again.
