Newcastle Brown Ale

I went to a bar for dinner with an old friend up in Roselle Park. The choices at this bar were pretty limited, so I went with the Newcastle. I’ve had Newcastle a bunch of times, but not lately and obviously never reviewed this before. Since Nicole wasn’t there, I wasn’t able to take a picture, so I hope this will do.

ABV: 4.7%

Style: English Brown Ale

Trivia: According to, “This is a brand of beer produced by Heineken international.”

Random: For some reason, every time I see this beer, I think of soccer, which makes absolutely no sense, since Carlsberg is more associated with soccer.

This brew was served on tap in a pint glass. It had a one finger white head with moderate carbonation. The color is an expected dark brown. There is also some lacing on the glass. On the nose, there’s a bit of malt, but not much else going on. This beer was served very cold, so that could be a reason the nose was so muted. The taste was really crisp, and again, this could be because it was so cold. On the taste, I got a lot of malt and caramel. There’s also a bit of a sweet burnt taste going on. The finish on this beer is mildly bitter, but not unpleasant. This would make a great session brew. This is a great beer to pick when there’s not much else on the menu. It goes down easy. This brew isn’t going to floor you with complexity, but is definitely something with more flavor than a macro. I would definitely have this again if the pickings were slim at the local watering hole.
