Val picked this mead out because she’s a huge fan of strawberries. I had never heard of the meadery before and it’s relatively local in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Trivia: According to the meadery website, “Pikwant Field starts out a light, dry mead, to which we then add 40 pounds of strawberries and 20 pounds of kiwis per barrel, resulting in a big, tart fruit flavor.”

This mead poured with no head (not surprisingly) and it had a cloudy, bright pink body. There were visible floaties in the bottle. The nose was very fragrant with notes of kiwi and artificial strawberry, almost like a strawberry hard candy. It also had a green grape note and a honey sweetness as well. The taste started with a sharp, booze bite. I was surprised because the ABV wasn’t gigantic for a mead. Then, the fruit came through. First, the strawberry came through, which still had a slightly artificial taste, but not as bad as the nose. The kiwi came through too, but not enough to balance the strawberry. It had some sweetness from the honey as well, but this was definitely strawberry forward. The body was thick and sticky, which made for a long finish that stuck on the tongue awhile. This was $14.49 for the bottle, which was $1.14 per ounce. Meads tend to be more expensive, so this didn’t shock me. I really wanted to like this cider, but the flavors were disjointed and the taste could have been more natural.
