Last night, Katie and I went to Basil T’s in Red Bank. I’ve been there once before and I enjoyed it, but I’ve never tried the beer. Honestly, for me, it’s a weird concept. An upscale Italian restaurant with beer? It really doesn’t work for me. Unfortunately, the food and the service were not up to snuff. Let’s see how the beer went down.
Style: American Amber/Red Ale
Trivia: According to the brewery website, “A medium-bodied amber ale with a nice malty flavor accented with caramel malts and well-balanced with Crystal hops.”
Random: Basil’s brags that they have the largest “mug club” in America.
Sorry for the picture being so crappy. The lighting was low, to say the least. It poured with a thick one and a half finger white head that took awhile to dissipate. It left some lacing on the glass as well. The body was a clear, chestnut-brown with moderate, visible carbonation. The nose was insanely mild. I think I got a bit of sweet malt, but honestly, it was a struggle to peg this one. The taste was a bit better. I definitely got some sweet malts and then the bitterness came out at the end of the sip. Altogether, the flavors of the brew were pretty bland. The brew was definitely smooth but needed a bit more carbonation. It was also towards the watery side. The finish was pretty quick. This brew didn’t do anything for me at all. I wouldn’t have this again.
