We headed to Westchester yesterday for Val’s grandmother’s birthday. The weather was insanely hot, but at least the restaurant was air-conditioned. Across the street was a Farmer’s Market and I could not (nor would I want to) imagine standing out in the heat for hours on end. Today is no party either. It’s still insanely hot and humid and I have to mow my lawn at some point. Now, let’s talk about this beer from Japan…

tokyo

ABV: 5%

Style: American Porter

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Porter is an English traditional, dark-colored beer with roasted malt flavor. Beer of this style is popular not only in England but all over the world. We brew fresh and genuine Porter in Japan. Deep dark in color, Tokyo Black is a Porter with extremely rich taste and creamy top.”

Random: Given the heat, I should water the plants too.

This beer poured with a two finger, light brown head that dissipated slowly. It left some lacing on the glass. The body was black with no visible carbonation due to the color. The nose was oddly sweet with milk chocolate and roasted malts. The taste was thankfully much less sweet with notes of smoke and dark chocolate. It had roasted malts and some creaminess as well, although not a lot of coffee notes. It had a thick body with light carbonation that could have been turned up more. It finished quickly with a creamy mouthfeel and milk chocolate. This beer was expensive at $5.99 a can ($.50 per ounce) for what was just a middle of the road beer for me. I

Suiyoubi No Neko

Posted: November 3, 2014 in Reviews, Witbier, Yo-Ho Brewing Company

This is a beer that we absolutely bought because we liked the can art. It has a cute cat on it and I knew absolutely nothing about the brewery before this. So, I didn’t know if this would be a gem or a dud. Let’s see how it worked out.

ABV: 4.5%

Style: Witbier

Trivia: According to Brewery International, “Suiyoubi No Neko is an Ale in the Belgian Wit style. A lightly carbonated and smooth Wit Ale with flavors of citrus, coriander, cinnamon and wheat. Scent of straw and citrus.”

Random: I’m really liking the show “Gotham.” I just read that they cancelled “A to Z” which I also liked. Figures. If I like a show, of course it gets cancelled.

This beer poured with a half a finger of white head that dissipated quickly and left slight lacing on the pint glass. The body was a hazy, light yellow color with moderate carbonation. The nose was not that fragrant and had some yeast, spice and wheat to it. The taste was not impressive. It had some lemon to it with grain and a bit of yeast. The lemon flavor was weirdly artificial, almost like Italian ice. The yeast was very bready and there wasn’t enough spice to it. The body was very thin with lighter carbonation than I wanted in the style. It had a thankfully quick finish with some lemon and yeast. I really wasn’t a big fan of this beer and wouldn’t rush back to have it again, especially since it was $6.49 a can. I understand that it’s an import, but it was a total rip off.
