BFM Spike & Jerome’s Cuvee Delirante (Collaboration Ale)

Happy President’s Day! I was stuck at work all day, unfortunately, whereas most people I know were off. Work was actually pretty busy today and I ended up staying later than I thought. Tomorrow, I’m actually working out of a different office tomorrow, which means that I’m getting up at 0500 tomorrow. Well, this brew should definitely help me sleep.

ABV: 10.03%

Style: English Barleywine

Trivia: According to beernews.org, “Terrapin brewer, Spike Buckowski and Dustin Watts, were excited to be in Jura, Switzerland, late last February for a collaborative brew with Jerome Rebetez of Brasseries des Franches-Montagnes (BFM). The intriguing rye barleywine, destined to be aged in rum barrels, will come through BFM’s distribution for a limited release in the states. This strong ale with 20% rye created a challenging mash during an almost ten hour brew day. Buckowski states, ‘Brewing at BFM was an extra special experience. For one, starting the brew from an iPhone is just ridiculous, but cheese fondue for lunch in the brewery…come on!'”

Random: I’m watching Hoarders and I seriously don’t understand hoarding. I think I’m the anti hoarder.

This brew poured with absolutely no head on a very cloudy chestnut colored body. There didn’t appear to be a lot of carbonation on the brew either. The nose was definitely interesting. I definitely got the rye on the nose coupled with a bit of sweetness and definitely a bit of the rum barrels. On the first sip, I nearly spit the beer out. I definitely did not expect this beer to be sour. And damn, it is sour. I took another sip and this beer is really sour and overwhelmed everything else. It was also flat. Completely and totally flat. There was also a bit of a buttery complex to it. But, that sourness is just awful. It also had a lot of booze on it. There was nothing I enjoyed about this beer, definitely not the long and sour finish. I got three sips down and I had to drainpour it. I know that a lot of people enjoyed this beer and said that it was really unique, but it just wasn’t for me. This could be one of the worst beers that I’ve ever had. At least the bottle was cool.
