Voodoo Black Magick

Here’s the start of the beers I’ve had the past couple of days and man, have I had some good ones. This was one that I’ve aged for a few years. Let’s see how it was.

ABV: 15.5%

Style: American Double/Imperial Stout

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “We at Voodoo Brewing Co. have taken over a decade of Matt’s brewing experience, our quirky personalities and wrapped it up into a line of beer oriented around what we feel are fun, flavorful and thought-provoking. We wish you enjoy our beers as much as we do brewing them.”

Random: Happy Philly Beer Week! I really like the format of the new app.

This beer poured with less than a quarter-finger of tan head. It dissipated slowly, but left no lacing on the glass. A tan crown was present on top of the black body. Due to the color, there was no carbonation that I could see. The nose had dark chocolate, cocoa and smoky, roasted malts. The taste was big, especially for aging for four years. There was a bite from the roasted malts with lots of dark chocolate. The booze was shockingly mellow. It had a light coffee note with smoke. Then, oak came through with vanilla. Roasted malts were there as well. This beer was seriously complex. It had a thick, chewy body with light carbonation, making it the perfect sipper. The finish was long with bitter, dark chocolate. I couldn’t believe how well this beer worked and I’m glad I let it age for so long. I’m not sure how much I paid for it since I wasn’t keeping track of prices back then, but if you have one hiding in your cellar, it’s definitely worth a try.
