Warped Wing Creepshow

I didn’t have many dark beers out in Ohio, but I wanted to give this local one a shot.

ABV: 6.66%

Style: American Porter

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Based off the Warped Wing brand foundation, we came up with a concept creating a metal forged steam-punk whale as symbolism for a dream that seemingly could never be. How could a whale, a metal whale ever fly? But with a vision, fortitude and sweat one can make anything happen especially if they put their minds to it. These dreams, ideas and hard work are what create inventions and innovations that change people’s lives forever. Each can tells it’s own story both visually and in copy about the beer, while collectively they tell the brand story, which is Warped Wing. The three-can trilogy and illustration style start in modern day timeframe with 10 Ton Oatmeal Stout. The setting is in an old, gritty metal foundry. The name is based on the original foundry 10 Ton box crane, which is still in the building today. This story is about four guys and their dream of opening a craft brewery in downtown Dayton, O. When you look up towards the top of the can you can see those same four guys toasting the newly forged whale as he makes his way out into the light, proudly bringing freshly brewed beer out into the world for all to enjoy.”

Random: Thick cut bacon is one of my favorite things.

This beer poured with less than a quarter finger of head that was light brown in color. It went away slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a dark brown, almost black in color with no visible carbonation. The nose was incredibly smokey with a bacon characteristic then a slightly sweet chocolate note. The taste was also quite smokey with a deep malt characteristic and dark chocolate shavings. There was also some black licorice at the end of their sip. The body was medium thickness with moderate carbonation. It had a long finish with smoke. This was a solid porter that I wish I had to cook with in Jersey. If you happen to be in Ohio, give this one a shot.

Warped Wing Gamma Bomb

Today’s selection is another beer that I don’t believe distributes out of Ohio. I found very little information about the beer on the website, but their logo is pretty cool. When I was in Ohio, I spent most of my time in Grove City and then another day in Columbus, but I never made it out to Dayton, although I hear that it is very nice. This beer was highly recommended by the bartender, who I became friendly with since I ended up at the same place about 3 times a week. Let’s see how it was.

ABV: 7.2%

Style: American IPA

Trivia: This comes in at 96 IBUs.

Random: They have a really cute Dayton shirt on the brewery website.

The beer poured with a half a finger of cream-colored head. It dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was slightly hazy and copper-colored. It had moderate carbonation visible. The nose had a lot of citrus characteristics to it. I picked up candied orange peel, grapefruit and mango. It had some malt as well. The taste had a lot of tropical fruit, specifically mango. It had the same candied orange peel and grapefruit as the nose. It also had pine needles and some bready malt. The alcohol was hidden on the beer. It had a thick body with a lot of carbonation. The finish was lengthy with pine and citrus hops. I enjoyed this beer a lot. If I could get this in New Jersey, I would pick up a six-pack of this.
