Mahr’s Saphir Weiss

After about 25 minutes at the other bar, Brauhaus called and said that they were ready for us. I had told Katie about this place and raved about the food, so she was really excited. She also had a great beer (I found out she likes berliner weisse brews with a shot of raspberry schnapps) that she actually enjoyed. This was the first brew that I had at the Brauhaus.

ABV: 5.6%

Style: Hefeweizen

Trivia: According to greatbrewers.com, “Extra Hoppy Amber Weiss. Mahr’s master brewer has a new love — an exciting and saucy new variety of Hallertauer hop called Saphir, German for ‘sapphire.’ There’s a metric ton of Saphir hops in this ground-breaking Weiss.”

Random: I think Katie is going to make me bring her here more. She loved this place.

This brew poured with a two finger, white head that dissipated slowly and left some lacing on the glass. The body was a hazy, yellow color with lots of carbonation. The nose was hay, lemon, wheat and yeast. Shockingly, I didn’t get any banana. The nose was a little different than the taste. The taste had wheat and a mineral quality, which transitioned into a floral quality. It also had a decent amount of citrus. The body was on the thicker side with heavy carbonation. This was a really interesting, unique beer than I really enjoyed. The finish was quick with some floral notes. It was very refreshing and complex. I would definitely have this brew again. It paired really well with food as well.
