Gun Hill Void Of Light

My feet are killing me from work. Val bought me new boots, which I desperately needed, but they’re not broken in yet. A beer should help this, right?

ABV: 7.9%

Style: Foreign/Export Stout

Trivia: According to a brewery website, “IT IS WITH GREAT PRIDE
that we at Gun Hill Brewing co. are the ones to bring beer making back to the Bronx for the first time since the 1960s, and contribute to the long tradition of brewing in New York State. By 1810, New York State was home to the largest brewing industry in the country, with well over 400 individual working breweries. Along with brewing, New York was the nation’s biggest hops-growing region, producing the majority of hops in America throughout much of the 19th century. Today, we get to declare ourselves as part of a new revolution in New York brewing. One that is not happy with the status quo. One that demands more from what they create and consume. And ultimately, one that like it has throughout history, brings pride to New York. With creative brewers working their craft, hop growing returning to the state, and a rich history to draw from; New York is once again staking a claim to its place in the brewing industry. Here at Gun Hill Brewing co., we’re doing our part by bringing you fresh, unfiltered, handcrafted brews. We use only the best, fresh, local ingredients to create our brews that are not only unique, but have a quality equal to our passion for making it. We are a local New York brewery, and we are proud of our roots, and our New York brewing brethren.”

Random: My heating pad is a happy sight after a long day.

This beer poured with a finger of tan head that dissipated slowly and left a lot of lacing on the glass. The body was dark brown, almost black. Due to the color, I couldn’t see any carbonation. The nose was filled with roasted malts, dark chocolate and light roasted coffee. The taste was exactly the same. It was just a standard export stout. There was roasted malts, smoke and dark chocolate. The coffee was not as pronounced in the taste and there was some black licorice as well. The body was on the thicker side with moderate carbonation. It had a quick finish with roasted malts. I thought this beer was alright, but nothing I needed to revisit.

Gun Hill Propaganda Machine

I can’t wait for football season to start again. It’s my favorite sport and the Eagles are reigning champs. Hopefully, we have a repeat.

ABV: 5.3%

Style: Dortmunder/Export Lager

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Kieran and Dave both have very strong ties to the Bronx. Kieran was born in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx, and returned to go Manhattan College, while Dave’s grandfather played football at Evander Childs HS, Dave’s mother grew up in Riverdale, and Dave spent all 13 years of grade and high school in the Bronx. After spending many years in the corporate world, Kieran and Dave decided it was time to start something more in line with their passions. Combining their love for craft beer, desire to create a thriving company, and a need to provide something better to the people, their vision for Gun Hill Brewing co. was born. Both are extremely proud to bring production brewing back to the borough.”

Random: This is my first beer from Gun Hill.

The beer poured with a thick, one finger, ecru colored head. It dissipated slowly, but left some lacing on the glass. The body was a bright yellow with moderate carbonation visible. The nose was rather mild with some yeast and white bread. There was a hint of floral hops in the background. The taste was more of the same. It had a prevalent yeast and white bread flavor. The floral hops were more pronounced than in the nose, but not by much. The body was light and crisp with enough carbonation to back it up. The finish had floral hops and yeast. This was a beer that I bought awhile back in New York, so I don’t recall how much it was, but don’t remember this being very expensive. I liked the beer, but it was relatively simple.
