DESTIHL Wild Sour Series: Here Gose Nothin’

About five or six months ago, I started seeing a lot of people review beers from this brewery, which I had never heard of. After some research, I found that they have a restaurant and a 60 barrel production brewery. They have an entire series of beers that are different types of sours (and this beer is part of that series). It generally gets favorable reviews, so hopefully I enjoy this one.

ABV: 5%

Style: Gose

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Our Leipzig-Style Gose undergoes a spontaneous fermentation, similar to Belgian-style Gueuze/Lambic beers, and exhibits a complexity of acidic flavor and aroma contributed by wild yeast lactic fermentation. Lemon, lime and other citrus-like qualities are present in aroma and on the palate, which is balanced by the spicy character of added coriander and a mineral-mouthfeel from added sea salt.”

Random: They also have a raspberry Berliner-weisse that I want to try.

This beer poured with a half a finger of white head that dissipated instantly. It left no lacing on the glass. The body was a clear amber color with light carbonation visible. The nose was tart with lactobacillus, slight fruit, almost like key limes. I didn’t pick up much else. The taste was moderately sour and was complemented by a generous amount of sea salt. Some coriander came through too. It also had key limes and lemon. The body was light with high carbonation. It had a long and tart finish with citrus. This was $3 a can ($.25 per ounce), which is a bit expensive, although I did purchase it in Pennsylvania from a bottle shop. I enjoyed this beer and it went down very easily. It’s not the best gose I’ve ever had, but it’s definitely worth a shot.
